Promoting Geophysics through search engine marketing

Geophysics is a key discipline of Earth sciences, it looks into the fundamental construction and evolution of planet Earth.  The application of physical principles is put into place to study not only planet Earth but other planets in our solar system also.  Geophysics has concerned the distress felt by some of the worlds worst phenomena, such as earthquakes which are the cause of thousands of deaths, and leave mayhem and a path of destruction.  It also concerns the creation and destruction of planets.  The disappearance of the ice sheets, which are then replaced by land, volcanic eruptions and all other processes on the planet which cannot be observed directly.  All of the above processes are related to Geophysics.

Until I studied Geophysics at University I had no idea what the subject was, I wanted to give other people an incite into the subject.  I decided the only way of doing this was to create and build my own website, this way when people typed Geophysics into there internet search engine, my site would appear and it would answer any questions, in a simple factual manner.

I contacted a web design company, who worked with me to create the perfect website.  I wanted the site to be eye catching and informative.  Between us we came up with the perfect design, when my website was complete it went live on the web.  As I had never had a website before, I had no idea what sort of response I was going to get.  As time passed I noticed that I was only getting one or two hits a week.  When I looked through my search engine for my own site, I noticed that it was on the 10th page, so was probably about 100th on the search engine search.

I hadn’t spent all of my money designing a great website for nothing, so I decided to look into how to get my website higher up in the search engine search.  I approached a company who were involved in Search Engine Marketing and Online Marketing (vision64.com suchmaschinenmarketing).  They were more than happy to help me in my quest of promoting Geophysics.  The advised me what to do, and told me to wait a couple of months and I would find that my website would have moved up the ranking

A month passed and I noticed that my website had moved from 10th page to page number 3.  I was getting found easier and I noticed more hits on my site.  Within two months I had moved to number 7 and I was on page 1, I was getting around 30 hits a week on my website.

I have learnt through this whole process that, having a website is all well and good but its main aim is to be found, a website will only be found if it’s on the top of the search engine search (SEM).  If I ever take on a project like this again I will be consulting with a Search Engine Marketing company before I go live on the web.
