Geophysics from a different perspective
Geophysics is gaining high importance as a branch of study and research. This is in fact a branch of earth
sciences involving the study of Earth by using methods like seismic, electromagnetic or radioactive processes.
These physical methods are employed in Geophysics to know more about Earth. Planetary science makes use of the
techniques and principles of geophysics for their functioning as well.
Geophysics deals with various sub branches involving Seismology, gravity, atmospheric science, geomagnetism and
so on. Out of this, seismology deals with the study of Earthquakes and the propagation of waves through the surface
of earth.
Research and studies are going on this area of Geophysics to control and prepare for an unexpected earth quake
at any time.
The study of gravity of Earth is another major aspect of Geophysics.
This involves understanding more about Earth’s gravity and to learn about the calculations involved in it. The
representation of Earth and various measurements involving the study of gravity comes under the sub branch geodesy
of geophysics.
Various atmospheric conditions are studied under geophysics. This involves the processes in atmosphere, the
effects of these processes and meteorological processes. This is needed for weather forecasting, climatology and
various other requirements.
Earth’s magnetic field is studied under geomagnetism of geophysics. The influence of this magnetic field and the
magnetic poles and lines of magnetism are researched under geophysics. Geo-thermometry includes the study of
heating of Earth and heat flow in Earth.
The separate branch of geophysics which deals with the movement and quality of water on the surface of Earth is
known as hydrology.
Geophysics has a separate branch called physical oceanography which involves research on physical conditions
within ocean. They study about the physical properties of water in Ocean and also about the processes in Ocean.
Geophysics has a specific branch called tectonophysics for studying rock deformation and other processes in
geophysical areas. A numerical study of the interior of the earth is done under geodynamics of geophysics.
Significant studies are also available online or in public libraries.
This helps in learning about the evolution of the various layers of earth. The subsurface of the Earth and the
specialized properties of this surface if put to study under an applied branch of geophysics called exploration
geophysics.
Engineering principles are applied into geophysics under geological engineering. This is put into application in
various areas. Glaciers are studied under geophysics in a special name called glaciology.
Properties of rocks studied under petrology also come under geophysics. Mineral physics, engineering geophysics
and mineral physics are different sub-branches coming under geophysics.
Thus geophysics deals with various areas of high concern to Earth. They deal with different areas which are of
high relevance to the existence of life on Earth. More and more research is coming under geophysics to know more
about Earth.
All the branches under this main title are put to a thorough analysis and are integrated under a common head
called geophysics. Geophysics is an important field of study all over the world and helps understand changes
in topography and physical changes that occur on a daily basis.
